I look down from my column, as folk grab a moment’s respite from the rat-race, this Sunday afternoon. It doesn’t have to be this way. Greed drives discontentment, exploitation, war. Self-sufficiency is the path to peace. When we produce everything we need, covetousness, and the endless lust for growth, is history. We’ll never be self-sufficient in bananas, but we can grow apples, pears, raspberries, strawberries aplenty. No-one ever went to war for bananas. Sure, we can still trade, but ensure we want for nothing first. So trade is friendly, not fraught. How I long for the killing to stop. (99)

  2. Alice Audrey says:

Was there ever really such a thing a peaceful trade?

  3. gahlearner says:

I love this. Self-sufficiency, what a revolutionary thought. Not to dump grains and fruits, not to import exotic fruit that never tastes like it should anyway… if only…

  4. Amy Reese says:

Interesting take, Mick. You wonder what all the fighting is for is we could all just trade nicely and be friends. It would seem possible, but no. Greed does get in the way. Nice one!

  5. There was a time when people would kill for tulips… why not bananas? Oh, the world is a crazy place! Interesting piece, Mick.

I think you need an S on “folk” in the first line.

I like the idea of self-sufficiency and trading. You’re right about Greed and lust for power. It’s easy to declare war when it’s someone else’s sons and daughters who will be doing the dying.

  7. I loved this one…so visual. I can see why bookpino reblogged it 🙂

  8. Yes, but I need rare minerals for my iPhone, and if I have to destabilise a large African country or two to get those minerals, well, why not.

  9. Oh to stand there on a pillar and contemplating has to be great, I love the thoughts.

  10. Peaceful trade could equal a peaceful life if only we could stop fighting each other.

  11. Great message. Bananas are kind–a good, safe fruit to grow. No wars, more bananas! 🙂
