Gods

ice cream

The Inkwell stage a themed flash fiction competition each month: create a piece from scratch in half-an-hour.  August’s theme is “without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos”.

Gods.
“It’s all in delicate balance.”
“Well, errrr, yes, OK.”
“The forces of nature have to be set to create just the right amounts of mass, momentum, energy and inflation, which in turn give us a steadily expanding universe.”
“I can see that but I don’t understand how you make it happen.”
“Ah yes, well that’s the clever bit. I’m particularly proud of my contribution here. I realised that it would all come down to entropy in the end. So I rigged the computer to calculate the necessary spread of matter and gave it some reference data.”
“Reference data?”
“You can’t do anything without a starting point. So to create a universe to sustain life, it has to contain water. So you need a water reference. The computer is connected to this sensor which sits in a small vat of ice cream.”
“You’re kidding me.”
“Not at all. Life, the universe and everything is driven from here. Without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos.”
